Beaver Removal & Exclusion
Television and movies tend to portray beavers as industrious, lovable creatures β and in the right context, that image is not entirely wrong. They are remarkably intelligent, choose trees with purpose, and engineer complex lodge structures. But when they set up on your property, that same drive to build and chew creates serious and costly problems.
After the capybara, the beaver is the second-largest rodent in the world and the largest in North America. They typically weigh between 25 and 75 pounds, with older males sometimes reaching 100 pounds and 40 inches in length.
The Damage Beavers Do
Beavers are among the few animals that actively reshape their environment. Their dams can cause widespread flooding, destroy commercial forests, and on your property, strip the bark from trees in a process called girdling β which leads to tree death. They have also been known to block culverts, resulting in flooded structures and damaged boat docks.
If beavers are on your property, approach them with caution. They aggressively defend their territory, and attacks on humans have been documented. Their long, strong teeth can inflict serious injury. They are also potential carriers of rabies, Giardia (which causes beaver fever), and other transmissible diseases. Your pets are also susceptible.
What To Do
Beaver removal requires specialized knowledge and equipment. They are a protected species in some contexts, and trapping them incorrectly is both dangerous and potentially illegal.
