Coyote Removal & Exclusion
For many people, their first real encounter with a coyote did not go the way Saturday morning cartoons suggested it would. Real coyotes are not bumbling cartoon characters β they are highly adaptable predators that have been expanding into suburban and urban areas at a significant rate. They look similar enough to a family dog that people sometimes do not take them seriously. That is a mistake. Your pets could look like an easy meal to them.
Coyote populations across Missouri have been growing. Although the Missouri Department of Conservation does not publish official statewide counts, reports from cities including St. Louis confirm the trend. In some areas, wildlife experts have estimated that populations doubled between 2020 and 2021. They can be legally hunted 365 days a year in Missouri with no bag limit, but hunting alone has proven insufficient to control their numbers.
The Real Danger Coyotes Pose
The greater risk coyotes present is to your pets and livestock. They are opportunistic hunters and will target small dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, and free-roaming livestock when the opportunity presents itself. They also carry serious diseases β Lyme disease, leptospirosis, canine distemper, and canine parvo β as well as heartworm and mange.
Direct attacks on humans are rare, but they do occur, particularly from animals infected with rabies. The mid-1990s saw a documented human attack in Missouri, and another rabid coyote attacked a person in 2020.
