Muskrat Removal & Control

Nuisance animal populations across Missouri have been rising steadily, and the muskrat is no exception. More and more homeowners and property managers are dealing with muskrat conflicts β€” and if you have been having issues with them lately, you are not alone.

Muskrats are destructive, semi-aquatic rodents. Despite their name and their superficially similar appearance to rats, they are not closely related β€” they belong to the family Cricetidae, which also includes voles, mice, and hamsters. They can grow a couple of feet in length and weigh around four pounds, though larger specimens have been recorded. They were originally called "musquash" before settling into their modern name.

Why Muskrats Are a Problem

Muskrats inhabit the same wetland areas as beavers and river otters β€” lakes, ponds, streams, and marshes. They are among the most bad-tempered and territorial rodents, and they are likely to bite if you get too close. They carry the same parasites and diseases as other rodents, with tularemia being the primary concern.

If you live within about 150 feet of any body of water, a muskrat could be a target. Between the damage they cause, the diseases they carry, and their overall aggressiveness, this is one rodent you do not want near your home or business. If you notice any signs of muskrat activity, keep your distance and contact a professional right away.
