Otter Removal & Exclusion
The North American River Otter, Lontra canadensis, is a common nuisance animal in Missouri. Their Latin name hints at it β some people call them Canadian otters β but they are widespread throughout most of North America. They are semi-aquatic mammals with sleek, powerful bodies, short legs, and webbed feet that also feature sharp, non-retractable claws. Their small heads, long necks, flat muscular tails, and small eyes and ears set high on their heads give them a distinctive look. They are built to swim, and they can hold their breath underwater for up to 8 minutes.
Habitat, Feeding Habits, and Behavior
River otters spend most of their time in water and can live in both fresh and saltwater environments across a wide range of climates. They often share habitat with beavers, occupying lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and marshes. They can travel up to 18 miles inland when food is scarce. River otters are carnivores β their primary diet includes fish, frogs, turtles, and other small mammals.
As their population has grown, so have conflicts with humans. River otters are often described as timid but friendly and sometimes playful β but like most wildlife, they can become unpredictable and dangerous when threatened. Otter bites are infrequent, but they do happen. They also carry parasites and transmit zoonotic diseases including rabies, salmonellosis, tuberculosis, and leptospirosis.
The Damage River Otters Do
Otters are capable of substantial destruction. They have been known to wreak havoc on fish populations in both natural and man-made water bodies. They disrupt fish farming and breeding programs, destroy nets, and have even been known to invade parks. They target shelter beneath decks, docks, and in boathouses. Their teeth never stop growing, so they chew constantly β and they will damage your boat if given the chance.
